Technology is a Commodity Solutions are a Premium

By Rick Wilson When I look around both the technology industry as a whole and the hosting industry specifically, I see an interesting phenomenon that’s become the “norm”. Many of us got into tech and hosting because we liked technology and wanted to use the latest and greatest hardware and that led to an expertise and we monetized that expertise by building businesses in this space.

Working with multi-regional websites

Webmaster Level: Intermediate Did you know that a majority of users surveyed feel that having information in their own language was more important than a low price? Living in a non-English-speaking country, I’ve seen friends and family members explicitly look for and use local and localized websites—properly localized sites definitely have an advantage with users

10 Billion Tweets and Counting…

It’s the end of the week, so let’s look at one of this more light-hearted stories from the past few days… Apparently, more than 10 billion tweets have been sent on Twitter since the micro-blogging service was launched in 2006. That’s a lot. The tabloid press will undoubtedly come up with metaphoric comparisons to show just how big 10 billion is.

12 Ways to Think “Big Picture” and Why You Should Bother

The everyday in-the-trenches part of working for yourself can not only be all-encompassing and constant, but it’s also necessary. After all, it’s these small incremental actions you take everyday that provide the value to your customers and essentially pay the bills.  Plus, many of us find that it’s difficult to set aside time for any activities that don’t directly result in income. But despite the time challenge, there are several indirect business processes you should dedicate time to if you want to maximize your potential for growth.

The life span of a blog post

Blogging has come a long way since I started first reading blogs and since my first blog post  (old blog on typepad).  They have evolved from a pure publishing one to many model into a two way system where follow/follower, comments, reblogs, and “likes” provide a whole new experience.  But one thing I’ve noticed is that a blog post may receive a fair amount of interaction on the first day, little if any interaction on day 2 and it drops off big time after that. Even though Google directs a nice chunk of traffic to older posts, the interaction is still low. Compare that with an message board.

Thursday Signal – Repeat After Me: Apps Are (Currently) Myopic (Or…We’ve Seen This Movie Before…)

They loved it for what it was, for what it could be, and for the opportunity it presented to them – a newly fallen bowl of virgin powder, into which clever and entrepreneurial programmers could strap it on and push off to lay fresh tracks. Announcing The Fifth Annual CM Summit: Theme and Initial Lineup (FM blog ) I had to remind you of this, didn’t I? I’m not claiming to be deeply informed about the app marketplace, which Google stirred up today (and, to my mind, the market could use a few more spoons).
