The hazards of giving birth in Zimbabwe

A week ago a woman gave birth at a tollgate. According to the story the woman was on her way to Gweru Hospital where she had been referred to by the Shangani District Hospital presumably because the district hospital was not capacitated to do the delivery. But that’s just my deduction.

Don’t dine with the dictator

Read this open letter from Dale Doré Dear Prime Minister, After a brave, harrowing and tearful account of a victim’s experience of being raped you asked: “How do you confront a dictator using democratic means?” With due respect, Prime Minister, it is not by dining with the dictator every Monday while crimes are committed against your supporters. Nor do you confront a dictator by proclaiming that he is part of the solution when he is, and always has been, part of the problem.

Visual Studio 2010 RC – Silverlight 4 and WCF RIA Services Development – Updates from MIX Announcements

MIX is happening and there is a lot of excitement around the various releases such as the Windows Phone 7 Developer Preview, IE9 Platform Preview and few other announcements that have been made.  Clearly, the Windows Phone 7 Developer Preview has generated the maximum interest and opened a plethora of opportunities for .NET Developers.  It also takes the mobile development to a new generation and doesn’t force developers to learn different programming language. Along with this, few other releases have been out.  The most anticipated Silverlight 4 RC is out and its corresponding templates are also out there for you to download.  Once VS 2010 RC was released, it was much of a disappointment that it doesn’t support SL4 development as well as the SL4 Business Application Development (a.k.a. WCF RIA Services).   There were few workarounds though nothing concrete.  Earlier I had written about how the WCF RIA Services Preview does work with ASP.NET Development using VS 2010 RC.

My ideal home entertainment system

I was reading Fred’s post today, The Ideal Phone System , and what stands out is how many older technologies didn’t stand the test of time because they were designed with a different set of assumptions about the evolution of voice. In some ways, Fred’s post reminds me of my longtime desire to find the ideal home entertainment system. As we’ve moved a number of times, I’ve created and changed our home a/v system several times over

How to enter a logo design contest in ten minutes flat. Without having to design anything

Don’t want to get labeled as a snooty designer (again), or an elitist gatekeeper (again) so rather than turn this into another “ some designers on 99designs swiped our stuff ” whiny baby screed (again), perhaps we should use this example of spec work ‘inspiration’ to demonstrate how to enter a logo contest on 99designs in ten minutes flat. Without actually having to design anything. You know, “ evolving “, as in the “ evolve or die ” mantra that graphic designers have heard so much recently

Choosing A Web Application development Language

Choosing a web application development language has become a critical task, as programmers now have to develop websites with multiple functionalities. As different application does different types of tasks, it has almost become impossible for a website developer to opt for any particular web application development language. However, thanks to the unprecedented growth in the field of web development , websites now can be built with multiple scripting languages such as Cold Fusion, Perl, JSP, ASP.NET, PHP etc and this has definitely added a new dimension in this field.

Making your ASP.NET/HTML Websites Indic aware – accepting Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and other language input

This post is specific to India Its been a month since I wrote my last post.  Much of work has been happening around planning for Tech Ed India , the upcoming Virtual TechDays this week as well as our Developer content at the Great Indian Developer Summit 2010 .  Its going to be one exciting period starting this week and I am glad I would be able to meet a lot of folks who have written to me personally that they would like to catch up at Tech Ed India. For now, I had a chance to meet the Microsoft India Development Centre team that worked on the Microsoft Indic Language Input Tool (erstwhile Akshara). The team updated me that they have also released the scripts  so that the Indic input feature can be encapsulated into your own websites.  For example, if you are having a web page where you collect user information, you can pretty much make your site indic aware i.e
