10 Years of PHP Community (for me) – Sebastian Bergmann

Rather than commemorating the release of a legacy version of PHP (PHP 4.0.0 was released May 22nd 2000 and has been superseded by PHP 5 almost six years ago), this blog posting remembers the anniversary of the first gathering of the German PHP community.

Three free remote-access apps for iPhones

The App Store is home to numerous apps that let you connect to a desktop PC from afar. Granted, navigating Windows on a screen as comparatively tiny as the iPhone’s is not a lot of fun, but it works better than you’d expect. TeamViewer brings powerful remote-access features to your iPhone, yet it doesn’t cost a dime

Evolution of input

I’ve mentioned before that I’ve wanted to see Windows grow to support multiple keyboards and mice on the same computer. A WPF Forum Question about using a 2nd monitor’s touch screen without interfering with applications on the other screen, is another instance of a similar thing…and probably a more important scenario. Having a touch monitor as a related, but separately addressable device sounds like a great scenario to enable…

The accountability problem – Paul Reinheimer

I’m working on a volunteer side project for a local dance studio, the website will handle the standard sort of things: creating classes, registering students, matching leads to follows, etc. We would like to have some level of accountability when various records (user, class, etc) are modified. That way if problems arise later, we can see who did what, and when

Sharp Aquos CT2 (LC-40CT2E) review

The 40-inch, 1080p Aquos LC-40CT2E is an impressive budget LCD TV. Its standard-definition pictures could be better but it’s a very good high-definition performer, and its built-in Freeview HD tuner is a welcome bonus at this price. It doesn’t look as cheap as it is either

We are the stories we tell ourselves

I wanted to point you to this short TED talk below for two reasons: (1) It’s a pretty good example of delivery while displaying visuals on a monitor, and more importantly, (2) the content will be inspiring to many of you, and especially to those who may be stuck or looking to make a change in their life (but are a bit scared). In many ways, this presentation by Roz Savage is a good follow-up to the last post. Jake Shimabukuro (see below) excels by far surpassing other people’s expectations for his instrument.

Google Announces New WebM Video Standard, Open-Sources VP8

Yesterday Google announced WebM, a new web media project that combines the VP8 codec (which Google acquired in its purchase of On2) with the Vorbis audio codec and parts of the Matroska multimedia container. As part of this project Google has open-sourced the VP8 codec, which could have far-reaching consequences for the future of video in HTML5. If you’re late to the HTML video game, here’s the play-by-play: the upcoming HTML5 specifications include a tag, which is intended to provide integrated video playback in web pages without the need for a third-party plugin (the browser would provide the necessary video decoding and playback controls)
