Branding and International Positioning

The globe seems to be shrinking, with even small businesses branching into new markets in new countries. However, many find that they don’t achieve the success they were seeking. A large part of this problem is due to a lack of understanding of the interplay between international positioning and branding.

Thank You For Arguing is a fascinating introduction to classical and modern rhetoric, packed with speechwriting lessons for every public speaker. It is grounded in the wisdom of the past (beginning with Aristotle’s ethos, pathos, and logos ) and yet written for modern speakers with countless references to everyday persuasive examples. This article is the latest of a series of public speaking book reviews here on Six Minutes

How to enter a logo design contest in ten minutes flat. Without having to design anything

Don’t want to get labeled as a snooty designer (again), or an elitist gatekeeper (again) so rather than turn this into another “ some designers on 99designs swiped our stuff ” whiny baby screed (again), perhaps we should use this example of spec work ‘inspiration’ to demonstrate how to enter a logo contest on 99designs in ten minutes flat. Without actually having to design anything. You know, “ evolving “, as in the “ evolve or die ” mantra that graphic designers have heard so much recently

Microsoft, jQuery, and Templating

About two months ago, John Resig and I met at Café Algiers in Harvard square to discuss how Microsoft can contribute to the jQuery project. Choosing A Web Application development Language

Choosing a web application development language has become a critical task, as programmers now have to develop websites with multiple functionalities. As different application does different types of tasks, it has almost become impossible for a website developer to opt for any particular web application development language. However, thanks to the unprecedented growth in the field of web development , websites now can be built with multiple scripting languages such as Cold Fusion, Perl, JSP, ASP.NET, PHP etc and this has definitely added a new dimension in this field.

The Tragic Comedy that is Rich Text Editing on the Web

The problem is this: clients want a word processor, but developers want clean semantic HTML. Web page rich text editors were supposed to be the answer. As far back as IE4 Microsoft have offered a rich text editing component; Mozilla also implemented a similar editor and other browsers have now done so too

Ten Free Futuristic Style Fonts For The Web From Typekit

I’ve written several times about Typekit and how it’s dramatically changing the face of web typography by offering an increasingly large library of fonts which can be displayed on the web without using Flash or alternative images or any other jiggery-pokery. In the past, I’ve also written about different categories of type , so in this post I’m looking at some of the typefaces that are loosely labeled “Futuristic.” The ironic thing about these futuristic fonts is that many of the look quite retro, but they can be fun to use (sparingly) in your designs. All of the fonts featured here are from the Typekit trial library, so if you’re just dipping your toe into the Typekit world and want to play with some fonts these are free when you sign up.

A few weeks ago, Matt announced on this blog the newest offering from 99designs : ready-made logos. Today 99designs have announced that their new logo store is now open for business .

10 Billion Tweets and Counting…

It’s the end of the week, so let’s look at one of this more light-hearted stories from the past few days… Apparently, more than 10 billion tweets have been sent on Twitter since the micro-blogging service was launched in 2006. That’s a lot. The tabloid press will undoubtedly come up with metaphoric comparisons to show just how big 10 billion is.

12 Ways to Think “Big Picture” and Why You Should Bother

The everyday in-the-trenches part of working for yourself can not only be all-encompassing and constant, but it’s also necessary. Chicago-based Crowdspring have taken a new ‘ nuke on sight ‘ policy on members who insist on entering stock images into their logo contests.
