Dynamic Assertions for Zend_Acl in ZF – Ralph Schindler

In Zend Framework 1.9.1 , Zend_Acl gets two major issues resolved and a simple API change that now make it possible to create a more robust, more expressive ACL definition with less code. ZF issues ZF-1721 and ZF-1722 , each nearly two years old, have both been solved. Over the last two years, I’ve seen a variety of duplicate issues come into the issue tracker, which stem from two fundamental flaws in Zend_Acl – “Zend_Acl::isAllowed does not support Role/Resource Inheritance down to Assertions” and “Zend_Acl assertions breaks when inheritance is required (ie DepthFirstSearch)”.

No More Passwords on SitePoint PDFs!

Earlier this year, Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Michael Lynton said, “I’m a guy who doesn’t see anything good having come from the Internet.” Ostensibly, he was referring to the proliferation of piracy and file sharing that continues to diminish certain streams of entertainment industry income. However, the subtext of this statement has much wider implications, which, unless critically examined, could well prove calamitous for the ongoing viability of the industry itself.

AWS PHP5 Libraries as svn:externals – Clay Loveless

Many of Amazon’s official PHP5 libraries for Amazon Web Services are now available (unofficially) for use as Subversion svn:externals. To add to your SVN-managed project, just do something like this: svn propedit svn:externals library And add: Amazon http://killersoft.googlecode.com/svn/AWS/tags/update-2009-05-15/Amazon This assumes, of course, that you’re keeping your external libraries in a directory called “library” (many Zend Framework-based projects are laid out like this). Adjust to suit your own needs if necessary.

What Firefly/Serenity Can Teach Us About PHP – blog.phpdeveloper.org » PHP

At the risk of alienating some of my readers out there…who am I kidding – most of you liked Firefly, didn’t you? Having just watched Serenity yet again and recently seeing several episodes of the canceled-before-its-time series Firefly, I noticed that there’s some similarities between it and PHP as a whole. So, here’a quick list of a few I’ve noticed – feel free to add some of your own in the comments: Just because it’s not the latest and greatest version, it doesn’t mean it’s not good.

Task, Information Management and Productivity Systems

Over the past two days, I’ve focused on to-do lists, including tips for increasing productivity and a set of online tools to consider . Today, I’m going to take a step back and cover a vital element of successfully using to-do lists (and managing tasks and information on a broader basis) – the system. As you can see from many of the comments my previous posts have received, there are many, many ways you can organize your information and create your own lists.

Magento with Facebook Connect – Michael Kimsal

My brother wrote a Magento module recently – the Facebook Connect Module .  It’s pretty straightforward, and allows you to make it easier for shoppers to enter in their information in to your Magento store.  When checking out, they can connect their Facebook info, using the Facebook Connect process, and their information will be imported in to your Magento store.  It’s not free – there is a charge for this, but the source code is included, not obfuscated or encrypted, so if you need to extend it or make customizations, you can. Possibly one of the more interesting things it does: “Alerts users via Facebook notifications to changes in their order.”  This sort of social networking integration with ecommerce sites will possibly be more common in the future – perhaps some other sites are doing it already that I don’t know about? You can also just sign up for the mailing list to be notified about new features and such over at http://biz.metrofindings.com/main.page/facebook_connect_magento_module.html What other sorts of Magento tie ins to social networks would you like to see?

Conference Speaking.. Works! – James McLean

Well, some of you may remember I presented a talk at last years Open Source Developers Conference in Sydney called ‘ Improving PHP Application Performance with APC ‘ – it was my first presentation, I learned a lot about one of my favourite subjects and I enjoyed the experience immensely. While I haven’t had the time this year to prepare another presentation for OSDC as I had planned due to the impending birth of my first child (it’s a girl!), endless renovations at home and all my other hobbies outside IT – Two months ago I was able to draw on the fact that I had presented at a conference on a specific subject while being interviewed for my current role. I can say without a shadow of a doubt – that having presented at a conference gave me a great leg up on my opposition for the role

To-Do Lists: 12 Online Tools for Organizing Your Tasks

Yesterday, I posted about to-do lists and tips for choosing a system, getting setup and maintaining your list. While I will backtrack a bit tomorrow and give you an overview of some of the more popular task and information management systems you can incorporate into your own process, today I am focusing on online task management tools. If you don’t have a need for a comprehensive project management tool or overall information management system, a simplified to-do list tool may be a perfect fit for you.

A really, really SPECtacular series of links…

Rather than dying the death that pro-spec advocates predicted, the debate about spec work, so-called “design crowdsourcing” and design contest sites seems to be heating up across the internet, as more and more designers become aware of the issue, with many seeing it as a threat to the graphic design profession itself. On the pro-spec side, there are a few more design contest companies rolling out their websites, presumably as more people figure getting a whole load of designers to work for free and selling the work to their clients is an awesome business plan. With summer vacation schedules, working on our new logo , retooling our website and focusing our brand , I’ve sorta been out of the loop for a month or so and thought a trip around the webs might be just what the doctor ordered.

PHP 5.3 Not In Next Version Of Ubuntu – Brandon Savage

When the next version of Ubuntu is released on October 29th, PHP developers won’t be able to upgrade to PHP 5.3 through the included package management tools. A meeting of the development team on July 30th nixed the inclusion of PHP 5.3 from inclusion in Karmic, the next iteration of Ubuntu for the desktop and the server. According to meeting minutes , there is concern amongst the Ubuntu security team that failure to include the suhosin patch in the PHP release would be a feature regression

Five Photoshop Layers Speed Tricks

Here are a few tips and tricks to help speed up your design work in Photoshop. There’s much more to layers than first meets the eye… Use one click to select everything on a layer You can quickly put a selection around all objects on a layer by holding down the Ctrl key (pc) or the Cmd key (mac) and clicking on the layer thumbnail icon on the Layers palette. Even if you have multiple, separate objects on the layer, they will all be selected.

And now, onto the website design

If you’ve been following our blog over the past few months, you’ll know that we’re planning a logo makeover and new brand roll out for The Logo Factory . In fact, we chronicled the development of our new logo starting here , continuing here , and then finishing up with the ‘final chapter’ here . Long and short of it – we’ve decided to lose the famous TLF house (even though it’s been with us for a while ) and use a simple font-driven design and a cog element.

Stripped To The Bone: Minimalist Web Design

“Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away.” -Antoine de Saint-Exupery Minimalism is an art movement, born in the twentieth century, which describes various forms of art, music, literature, design and architecture, where the work is reduced to the bare essentials. In web design, minimalism refers to the use of the smallest amount of images, colors, shapes, values and lines.
