Information Filled Under ‘.NET’

The life span of a blog post

Blogging has come a long way since I started first reading blogs and since my first blog post  (old blog on typepad).  They have evolved from a pure publishing one to many model into a two way system where follow/follower, comments, reblogs, and “likes” provide a whole new experience.  But one thing I’ve noticed is that a blog post may receive a fair amount of interaction on the first day, little if any interaction on day 2 and it drops off big time after that. Even though Google directs a nice chunk of traffic to older posts, the interaction is still low. Compare that with an message board.

How can I get objects and property values from expression trees?

This is a follow-up to the Getting Information About Objects, Types, and Members with Expression Trees post, so I would recommend that you read that one first. Among other code examples in that blog post, I demonstrated how you can get a property name as a string by using expression trees.

More Destruction

In the most recent tutorial called 3D Ball Dispersion , we learned a technique to offset an animation one slice at a time, to create a wave-like effect with 3d balls. After further experimentation, I’m now working on a follow-up tutorial that takes this technique even further using more built-in plug-ins for a shatter-like effect that breaks up your titles.

What is Pathos and Why is it Critical for Speakers?

American psychologist William James wrote: The emotions aren’t always immediately subject to reason, but they are always immediately subject to action. Emotions — whether fear or love, pity or anger — are powerful motivators for your audience. An audience emotionally stimulated in the right way is more likely to accept your claims and act on your requests.

NEW TUTORIAL: 3D Ball Dispersion

In this tutorial we will learn a technique to offset the animation of the CC Ball Action effect to create a cool transition. This effect uses only built-in plug-in and offers creative flexibility for a variety of looks. The project file also includes a script for offsetting the layers by 1 frame to make the process easier.

SysPathEditor, an utility application for managing environment path varibles(using WPF)

Background I know it’s not a daily task, but there are still chances of manually editing the PATH environment variables from time to time. The built-in UI in Windows for doing this job is so humble, sometimes painful.

Shiny New Title Project

So I’m still getting over a little cold but I wanted to make something shiny so here is a project file that uses 3D looking text with a billion layers to create depth and shadows. Everything was created with After Effect and there are no Lights in the scene. Watch Sample Video Download CS4 Project File (I don’t have CS3 on my laptop)

Always wanted 2 users on 1 PC! Now it is happening…

Yesterday I was in a meeting with the MultiPoint team here at Microsoft and I was very excited to hear that they helped release a new SKU for Windows Server called Windows MultiPoint Server 2010! See microsoft.com/windows/multipoint My vision was having 2 keyboards and mice on 1 pc on a desk, and supporting the ability to have users use 2 different applications. June 2007, I blogged : I'd love to have 2 monitors, 2 mice and 2 keyboards on a pc to enable 2 users. Unfortunately, Windows client has a bunch of ties to 1 app having focus, etc… MultiPoint Server gets around this by effectively using Remote Desktop sessions into the same computer

The Case for ViewModel

One of the comments I got on my last post on view/view model hookup options was the following: I’ve been a mvvm fan but actually when I see all the hoops to jump through I wonder at times how effective this is So I wanted to take a moment to list what I thought compelled me to adopt the ViewModel pattern of client application development (so much so, that I now feel odd writing Silverlight and sometimes even Ajax apps in any other way). Some will be obvious benefits, especially to those already using MVVM in their everyday development, but I want to throw in a couple that are farther out exploratory ideas that I am thinking about

More Star Action

So… I spent some more time playing with the CC Ball Action effect to create a logo reveal. I think there is a lot of possibilities with this plug-in and to simplify one step, we even created a quick script that offsets the layers.  In this example I used the Card Wipe filter to animate the logo on after the Ball Action animation.

View/ViewModel Association – Convention and Configuration-based Approaches

Some time back, I blogged about different options to hook up a view to its view model when following the ViewModel (aka MVVM) pattern. There are multiple approaches in use out there. I raised the possibility of a convention-based approach in addition to existing ones like the ViewModelLocator pattern.

Wave Test

Here is another test using CC Ball Action for a wall of balls… See new sample Video To answer a question from a previous comment, yes you can use this technique to recreate pictures or logos and even animate them on in a different pattern other than circular. More soon.
