A Simple Resource Injector for ZF Action Controllers – Matthew Weier O’Phinney

Brandon Savage approached me with an interesting issue regarding ZF bootstrap resources, and accessing them in your action controllers. Basically, he’d like to see any resource initialized by the bootstrap immediately available as simply a public member of his action controller. So, for instance, if you were using the “DB” resource in your application, your controller could access it via $this-> db

SabreDAV 1.0.9 released & CalDAV news – Evert Pot

The last SabreDAV announcement I made here was 1.0.4, which happened in January. Just today I’ve released 1.0.9, so I figured it’s time for a small update. A public demo site I’ve bought the sabredav.org domain, and placed a live demo on it for people to try out

SimpleDNSd: new features & bugfix – Mark Karpeles

Anyone using SimpleDNSd is strongly encouraged to update to latest SVN (you will have to erase the php-5.3.1 directory and recompile php to get it patched correctly). The current SVN version will most likely go release candidate and be released later. Current SVN release includes many fixes and improvements, including for SimpleDNSd, the DNS daemon written in PHP

Zimbabwe’s beleaguered artists

A week ago Carl J Ncube announced to a press conference that he would be spending a week living on First Street in Harare to raise public awareness about how piracy affects the local music industry. The public response as compared to the online response was disappointing. “I didn’t expect people in Zimbabwe not to respond to something as simple as moral support.

Book Review: Thank You For Arguing (Jay Heinrichs)

Thank You For Arguing is a fascinating introduction to classical and modern rhetoric, packed with speechwriting lessons for every public speaker. It is grounded in the wisdom of the past (beginning with Aristotle’s ethos, pathos, and logos ) and yet written for modern speakers with countless references to everyday persuasive examples. This article is the latest of a series of public speaking book reviews here on Six Minutes

The hazards of giving birth in Zimbabwe

A week ago a woman gave birth at a tollgate. According to the story the woman was on her way to Gweru Hospital where she had been referred to by the Shangani District Hospital presumably because the district hospital was not capacitated to do the delivery. But that’s just my deduction.

Don’t dine with the dictator

Read this open letter from Dale Doré Dear Prime Minister, After a brave, harrowing and tearful account of a victim’s experience of being raped you asked: “How do you confront a dictator using democratic means?” With due respect, Prime Minister, it is not by dining with the dictator every Monday while crimes are committed against your supporters. Nor do you confront a dictator by proclaiming that he is part of the solution when he is, and always has been, part of the problem.

Visual Studio 2010 RC – Silverlight 4 and WCF RIA Services Development – Updates from MIX Announcements

MIX is happening and there is a lot of excitement around the various releases such as the Windows Phone 7 Developer Preview, IE9 Platform Preview and few other announcements that have been made.  Clearly, the Windows Phone 7 Developer Preview has generated the maximum interest and opened a plethora of opportunities for .NET Developers.  It also takes the mobile development to a new generation and doesn’t force developers to learn different programming language. Along with this, few other releases have been out.  The most anticipated Silverlight 4 RC is out and its corresponding templates are also out there for you to download.  Once VS 2010 RC was released, it was much of a disappointment that it doesn’t support SL4 development as well as the SL4 Business Application Development (a.k.a. WCF RIA Services).   There were few workarounds though nothing concrete.  Earlier I had written about how the WCF RIA Services Preview does work with ASP.NET Development using VS 2010 RC.

My ideal home entertainment system

I was reading Fred’s post today, The Ideal Phone System , and what stands out is how many older technologies didn’t stand the test of time because they were designed with a different set of assumptions about the evolution of voice. In some ways, Fred’s post reminds me of my longtime desire to find the ideal home entertainment system. As we’ve moved a number of times, I’ve created and changed our home a/v system several times over

Microsoft, jQuery, and Templating

About two months ago, John Resig and I met at Café Algiers in Harvard square to discuss how Microsoft can contribute to the jQuery project. Today, Scott Guthrie announced in his second-day MIX keynote that Microsoft is throwing its weight behind jQuery and making it the primary way to develop client-side Ajax applications using Microsoft technologies

Choosing A Web Application development Language

Choosing a web application development language has become a critical task, as programmers now have to develop websites with multiple functionalities. As different application does different types of tasks, it has almost become impossible for a website developer to opt for any particular web application development language. However, thanks to the unprecedented growth in the field of web development , websites now can be built with multiple scripting languages such as Cold Fusion, Perl, JSP, ASP.NET, PHP etc and this has definitely added a new dimension in this field.

Making your ASP.NET/HTML Websites Indic aware – accepting Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi and other language input

This post is specific to India Its been a month since I wrote my last post.  Much of work has been happening around planning for Tech Ed India , the upcoming Virtual TechDays this week as well as our Developer content at the Great Indian Developer Summit 2010 .  Its going to be one exciting period starting this week and I am glad I would be able to meet a lot of folks who have written to me personally that they would like to catch up at Tech Ed India. For now, I had a chance to meet the Microsoft India Development Centre team that worked on the Microsoft Indic Language Input Tool (erstwhile Akshara). The team updated me that they have also released the scripts  so that the Indic input feature can be encapsulated into your own websites.  For example, if you are having a web page where you collect user information, you can pretty much make your site indic aware i.e

Technology is a Commodity Solutions are a Premium

By Rick Wilson When I look around both the technology industry as a whole and the hosting industry specifically, I see an interesting phenomenon that’s become the “norm”. Many of us got into tech and hosting because we liked technology and wanted to use the latest and greatest hardware and that led to an expertise and we monetized that expertise by building businesses in this space.

Working with multi-regional websites

Webmaster Level: Intermediate Did you know that a majority of users surveyed feel that having information in their own language was more important than a low price? Living in a non-English-speaking country, I’ve seen friends and family members explicitly look for and use local and localized websites—properly localized sites definitely have an advantage with users
