Presentation at Apple Store Ginza (Tokyo) Dec 15, 7:00 pm

On Tuesday (December 15), I will be presenting (in English) in the theatre at the Apple Store Ginza beginning at 7:00 pm. I’ll be sharing some simple visual principles and design lessons from the world around us that can be applied to presentation design and beyond. I’ll talk a bit about the contents of the new book — presentation zen design — which went to press last week and we’ll have some copies of the first book in English and Japanese to give away (PZD will not be available until about Dec 27).

ViewModel Pattern for Silverlight – Options for Hooking a View to its Model

In the ViewModel, aka the MVVM pattern, a view such as a UserControl is bound to its associated view model. The view model manages state exposed as observable properties, operations exposed as methods and raises notifications via events. An interesting question is how a View should specify its view model, and how a view model instance should be created.

So what’s 2010 got to do with it?

My visit to Johannesburg recently brought back memories of my mother, oddly enough, watching the construction that was taking place – the longsuffering looks on the strained faces of drivers who have long resigned themselves to being daily inconvenienced by the activities taking place to spruce up the city before the world comes charging in. I was reminded of similar days when the family was expecting some important guest and the whole house would be turned upside down and we would be exiled outside with strict orders to steer clear of mama and her broomstick. I always resented the disruption such visits brought to our lives – there would be the shifting of bedrooms and suddenly I would find myself sleeping on the floor while the ‘dignitary’ enjoy the luxury of my single bed and the comfort of mama’s best sheets and bed linen

Correct everything that stands against love

I was reading Ugandan feminist and lawyer Sylvia Tamale’s powerful response to the Anti-Homosexuality Bill last night. In a scathing assessment of this legislation, and the damage it would do to Uganda’s legal and social framework, she quotes Martin Luther King Jr., writing “Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice, and justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love.” Regarding the bill, a few important points stood out for me

Zimbabwe is changing

Over dinner on the weekend, the conversation turned to how different this year has felt from the past few. Of course, the difference is tinged with a mixture of relief and frustration. Economically, the relief of stable (even if high) prices, and goods (even when unaffordable) on the shelves has made the basic day-to-day requirements of getting by more predictable – but at the same time has made for a more expensive – and therefore even more tenuous – existence for many

No power to the people

From a Kubatana subscriber: Zimbabwe Electricity Supply Authority (ZESA)’s bills are really worrying urban residents.  The rates being charged by ZESA are too far beyond resident’s earnings and too difficult to pay by the end of the month.  Can the responsible Ministry look into this issue and save the already suffering people of Zimbabwe. People are ailing to meet these bills and worse that there is no improvement in power supply in residential areas

Region Tags in Google Search Results

Webmaster Level: All Country-code top-level domains (or ccTLDs) can provide people with a quick and valuable clue about the location of a website—for example, “.fr” for France or “.co.jp” for Japan. However, for certain top level domains like .com, .info and .org, it’s not as easy to figure out the location. That’s why today we’re adding region information supplied by webmasters to the green address line on some Google search results

SQL Azure Connection error “Cannot connect to <servername>" Client with IP Address is not allowed to access server: Error 40615

If you have been using the SQL Azure Portal for creating SQL Databases and connecting to them from your SQL Server Management Studio, you would have realized the ability to query the Azure Cloud Databases from within the management studio.  While this provides great opportunities in terms of relation capabilities and accessibility over the Cloud, there has been a recent upgrade to SQL Azure and in that process there has been a Firewall Support added to the SQL Azure Portal access. Specifically when you try to connect to SQL Azure, you would face the error Cannot connect to Additional Information Cannot open server requested by the login.  Client with IP Address ” ” is not allowed to access the host server. Login failed for user ‘ ’

Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 – a first look at the UI and Web Development

Visual Studio 2010 Beta 2 is out and has a slick new UI.  Also, this Beta has most of the features that would ship with the final version compared to the earlier Beta.  Note that while new features might be added, there are chances that some of the features demonstrated here may also not be a part of the final release.  But, for now, lets examine the current Beta 2.  The first thing you would notice and probably like, is the UI enhancements.  Herebelow, is the launch screen. Also, the start page has been modified to accommodate more useful things.  The good thing is that you can completely customize the Start Page since it is a XAML based UI.  You can find the start page itself as a Project at C:Program FilesMicrosoft Visual Studio 10.0Common7IDEStartPages once you install the Beta.  You can change it to reflect your organization specific templates, document repositories etc.,  Optionally you can even turn it off permanently, or, upon opening a project, using the checkbox options in the bottom left
