Top 10 Professional Blog Logos

There was a time when bloggers and writers logos were a fringe group sharing their feelings about politics and their recipe for awesome peanut butter cookies. While we have nothing against politics or cookies, it was hard to take the genre seriously. In the last few years, however, the field has become more and more professional—even cut-throat in some areas.

What plumbing and plumbers can teach us about do-it-yourself design, designing logos and designers

It’s the weekend of March Break and a slow news day, so it might be time to publish a ramble that I’ve been working on for a few weeks now. This post probably falls under the “ too long to read ” category for many (if so, you can always rummage through our Snippets for bite sized morsels)

Rolling Stone LA , a 10,000-square feet blend of restaurant, bar, and private event space slated to open later this summer in Los Angeles, needed a new logo. And who better to tap for the gig than Jim Parkinson , the renowned designer of the original Rolling Stone magazine version. Parkinson has been designing logos and letterforms for over four decades, beginning his career as a lettering artist for Hallmark Cards before redesigning the Rolling Stone logo in 1977, and designing lettering for bands such as Creedence Clearwater , Taj Mahal , The Doobie Brother s and Kansas .

Branding and International Positioning

The globe seems to be shrinking, with even small businesses branching into new markets in new countries. However, many find that they don’t achieve the success they were seeking. A large part of this problem is due to a lack of understanding of the interplay between international positioning and branding.

How to enter a logo design contest in ten minutes flat. Without having to design anything

Don’t want to get labeled as a snooty designer (again), or an elitist gatekeeper (again) so rather than turn this into another “ some designers on 99designs swiped our stuff ” whiny baby screed (again), perhaps we should use this example of spec work ‘inspiration’ to demonstrate how to enter a logo contest on 99designs in ten minutes flat. Without actually having to design anything. You know, “ evolving “, as in the “ evolve or die ” mantra that graphic designers have heard so much recently

Few people think of a celebrity chef as a small business success story , but just a little more than ten years ago Mario Batali was a small time chef just opening his first restaurant. New portfolio complete

A month ago I told you I was experimenting with a new portfolio design. Since then, and in between client work, I’ve been doing what I can to beef-up the case studies with larger contextual images, sketches, and mind-maps. The aim was to finally point the portfolio buttons here on my blog over to the new portfolio site

Chicago-based Crowdspring have taken a new ‘ nuke on sight ‘ policy on members who insist on entering stock images into their logo contests. In case you didn’t know, most stock image licenses strictly prohibit the use of their artwork in ANY logo (or trademark) and can cause all sorts of legal hassles if, or when, it happens.

Crowdsourcing hyperbole. Rumors about demise of graphic design industry greatly exaggerated?

Remember how graphic designers were told that spec work is the “ new reality ” and that in order to continue working in the graphic design industry, they’d have to “ evolve or die “? That translated loosely to “ be prepared to work for free, cause other people are “

Logo porn revisited: Another look at awesome DVNO motion video by Justice

We first wrote about this classic logo porn by French electro-pop duo Justice on The Factor! a few years back when it was first released. While taking care of some blog house-cleaning a few days ago, I discovered the original YouTube link for the DVNO video had gone dark, so I spent a bit looking for another.

Oscar weekend is upon us and the awards show will undoubtedly suck up the oxygen on the Tee Vee and the Internet for most of next week. As this is supposedly a logo design blog, not much to write about really, except wondering how Logorama , a cool little animated film that should interest graphic designers, will fare.

Experimenting with a new portfolio design

I spent last night and today experimenting with a new portfolio design — one I think is better suited to my personal design tastes. The starting point for the coding was this two-column CSS template courtesy of Roger Johannson, and the goal of my design is to place emphasis on the portfolio work (at the time of writing, contextual imagery for design projects hasn’t been added). The eventual plan is to incorporate the new design into my blog here, and I might need to hire someone more proficient with coding.

Oscar best picture nominations and their logos

The Oscar nominations were released this morning and I thought it might be fun to not only list the contenders, but also take a look at the logos of the top ten best pictures, ranking them from one to ten (according to my humble opinion, natch). Granted, some of the movies don’t technically feature ‘logos’ (while a few are quite strong) and the overall idea a bit of a stretch, but this IS a logo design blog, and if I don’t crowbar Oscar nominations into a blog post el pronto , someone else will.

Logorama. Short film featuring corporate brands as villains and heroes gets Oscar nod.

Logorama , a stunning film by French collective H5 (filmmakers Francois Alaux , Herve de Crecy and Ludovic Houplain ), is a violent, profane, action-packed caper set in a world comprised entirely of well-known corporate logos and mascots.

Five days in Dubai

I’ve read a lot about Dubai that paints a sad picture , but Philip Bloom makes it easy to look beyond the dark side and witness the undoubted beauty of the man-made surroundings. This four-minute timelapse video was filmed in Dubai over five days and five nights, shot using a Canon 7D and a Panasonic GF1 . It’s definitely best viewed full-screen.
