OrangeBeautiful Letterpress Cards packaging

Emily from OrangeBeautiful sent in this packaging for their Lattice Line of letterpress cards: “Since a lot of the greeting card packaging tends to be soft-fold clear plastic boxes, our letterpress-printed, die-cut paper boxes seem to be standing out in the market. They’re both a better-looking box for merchandising, and a more eco-conscious way of packaging due to the materials & production used AND the fact that customers can keep their cards in the box rather than tossing the packaging once they’ve gotten the product home!” See a few more after the jump.

Addressing the issue, Mexican designer Miguel Melgarejo has come up with a public urinal concept dubbed “Axixa” (urine in Nahuatl) that will help in maintaining the cleanliness in the streets. Featuring the shape that a leak leaves in a wall, the public ceramic urinal generates a permanent mark in public streets or places where people can urinate and participate in a manifestation in which the disposal itself becomes part of the public life.

Balvenie Whisky

Designed by UK based  Here Design : “We’ve recently finished a redesign of The Balvenie whisky, which involved working with a lot of great UK craftsmen to make sure the design embodied the respect that the company holds for it’s own craftsmen that make the whisky. Because the distillery was set up in 1892, we also wanted the design to be a true reflection of late 19th Century archival documents so it was important that each element of the design was limited by the printing processes of that period.” Check out shots of the letterpress and woodcuts after the jump.

Swaybath bathtub alters according to a person’s size

Day to day life can be so chaotic that it helps to take a step back and return yourself to a state where you are removed from the outside world. Drawing inspiration from childbirth and the calmness and security within the womb, British designer Ben Mazur has come up with a unique bathtub called “Swaybath,” which is filled from the drenching showerhead above the tub, and emptied through a valve in the bottom into a drain below. The calming, gentle movement of the water and subtle swaying, turning motion combined with the embrace of the silicone tub as it molds around you to create a placental hideaway from the outside world

Arbo-architecture: Grow your own home

You may have seen some of the most environment friendly structures around the world, but the “Arbo-architecture” by a bunch of young German architects, including Oliver Storz, Ferdinand Ludwig and Hannes Schwertfeger, is what you may call green from the core, for the structure is constructed with self grown natural or living trees. Growing the trees around a conventional support structure, which you may remove after the trees grows stronger, the Arbo-architecture (or botany building) grafts young willow trees, from trunk to top, to support the structure

Offline Design Inspiration: Wine Labels (Hic!)

I have to admit, one of my fantasy design jobs would be to design a series of wine labels. There’s the challenge of designing for a small area, there’s a certain austerity and sense of history surrounding wine-making, and it’s also a product I’m always interested in sampling. Wine labels were found on jars of wine in the tomb of Tutankhamun in Egypt, who died in 1352 B.C.
